WHAT IS VOLLEYBALL?

volleyball volleyball

Volleyball requires 6 players per team excluding the substitutes and libero. The game was originally known as mintonette which was named after badminton because of a similar concept.
The ball is from basketball, the net is inspired by tennis, and the use of hands is inspired from handball. First a more cricket inspired innings concept was introduced but then changed to sets after being inspired from baseball.
In 1947 the international federation of volleyball was established and it is also known as FIVB.

Did you know?
Most of the people must be aware that there are only two types of volleyball formats playing in the summer olympics which are beach and indoor vollayball. In the beach vollaybal there are only 2 players on both sides of the court and the surfcase changes to sand as the name suggests. But let me tell you that there is one more mode of volleyball which is played in snow known as snow volleyball and this recreation is offically considered by FIVB and all the rules of the beach vollayball format are followed just a bit modified for a three player version where three players play on one side unlike beach vollaeyball where 2 players play at a time.

Basic rules of the game

The premise of volleyball is simple: land the ball in-bounds in the opponent's half of the court without the opponent returning it successfully. Players on a team must use a combination of no more than three contacts to return the ball to the opponent’s side of the net. A point is scored when the ball lands within the court boundaries or when a playing error is made.

The first team to score 25 points by a two-point margin wins the set, with each match following a best-of-five sets format. If required, a fifth set is played to 15 points (a winning margin of two points is still required).Just like badmintion, tennis and other games there is also a duce point system when both the team have equal points at the match point and the team should achive a two point margin to win the set.

Rotation and positions of the court

Rotation and position

In the court there can be six players playing at a time. There are 3 zones, front(attack), back(defense) and the serve zone. In the front 3 players can be placed while in the back 3 players can be placed.

A rotation sheet is submitted to the refree with the player's number and name before match if there is any error in the rotation during a set then the point for the same would be rewarded to the opponent. Rotation happens clockwise while the placement of the positions is anti clockwise. Deciding and placing all the players as per thier roles is really important.

Roles of players on the court

  • As mentioned before the roles of the players include, the outside hitter(right side hitter) and the opposite hitter who mainly do the job of attacking from right and left side of the front zone.
  • Since the stter is facing mostly towards the right side hitter that is why the hitter on the left side is called opposite.
  • The libero who wears a different color t-shirt is like a goal keeper who has only one job of defending/ receving the ball hit from the opponent's end.(denfense specialist).
  • There are 2 middle blockers(standard, on is changed with the libero when the player reaches the defense zone.) The middle blockers have to block the ball along with the setter.
  • The outside hitter would remain near them and collect the ball if they miss the block with the other players. The setter is the one who sets the ball for the hitters to hit.
